Canoeing on the Au Sable River and Camp Life

Today we woke up to blue skies and sunshine and much warmer weather.  We hopped on our bikes after breakfast and headed to North Country Canoe Outfitter for an excursion on the Au Sable River! Ollie spotted a box turtle crossing the street and saved him from certain death and placed him in a safer spot.

We were excited to get on the river and enjoy a beautiful day!  The pristine waters allowed us to see the river's bottom.  We took turns paddling down the river.

The Au Sable river runs approximately 138 miles through the northern lower peninsula and enters Lake Huron at the town of Oscada.

We stopped a few times so Oliver could explore the waters edge

We stopped for lunch along the rivers edge at a quaint restaurant.  Re-fueled, we biked back over to the shores of Lake Huron to get a better perspective with the nicer weather.  Oliver decided to jump in even though he had jeans on.  Luckily, I packed an extra shirt of mine that fit him like a dress and he biked back to camp.....at least he was dry!

We enjoyed some of the activities offered at the campsite.

Oliver mined for some fossils and was excited to find some shark teeth!

The camp had many activities for children which Oliver partook.  I spent a lot of time walking the park with the dogs and just relaxing.

Even Valor and Legend enjoyed the dog park and the agility equipment.  The dogs have been great travelers, adjusting to our adventures quite well.
A train track ran right behind the park and we placed a few coins waiting for the train run over them.  Oliver thought it was the coolest thing and will certainly remember this!

By ends day we were exhausted and relaxed around the campfire and even watched a bit of TV on the outside television.  I struggle with it a bit as the whole purpose of camping is to unplug!

Harlequin was a sensation with the camp kids and received lots of attention and social interaction!

After the train rolled through; we, along with our camping neighbors, searched the tracks for our redesigned coins.

We enjoyed our 2 days on the shore of Lake Huron despite the weather the first day. In fact, it allowed us to explore some areas we might not of seen otherwise.  But, we were certainly happy to see the sun the following day.  Tomorrow we head northwest to the the town of Petosky along the shore of Lake Michigan.
